Brain Tumors Specialist
Brain tumors include all tumors inside the skull. They are created by an abnormal and uncontrolled cell division, usually in the brain itself, but also in lymphatic tissue, in blood vessels, in the cranial nerves, in the brain envelopes (meninges), skull, pituitary gland, or pineal gland. Within the brain itself, the involved cells may be neurons or glial cells (which include astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells, and myelin-producing Schwann cells). Brain tumors may also spread from cancers primarily located in other organs (metastatic tumors).

Lower Back Pain

Lower Back Pain

What is it?
Lumbar disk herniation (LDH) is the protrusion of disk into the spinal canal in the lower back. Disks are the cartilage between the vertebral bodies that allow for movement of the spine.

Presentation

Trauma is the most common identifiable cause of LDH; though most patients suffer the onset of LDH without any identifiable trauma, and simply “wake up with it”. LDH often presents with symptoms of back pain. Most patients with back pain do not have LDH, they may have a pulled muscle or joint arthritis. LDH can create pressure on the nerves in the spine and can cause characteristic pain syndromes. Pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and weakness often are bundled together and radiate down from the back to the leg, also known as sciatica. Significant spinal canal compromise can result in bowel and bladder incontinence and paralysis (total or partial).

Spine Surgery Houston by Ajay K. Bindal, MD

Microdiskectomy, and MIS procedures are used spinal decompression for stenosis and diskectomy and more recently for spinal fusions as well. More complicated cases can even be used to treat scoliosis. The principles behind Minimally Invasive Surgery are to prevent muscle disruption and preserve stability of the spine. MIS helps preserve the posterior tension band of the spine that may be needed to prevent kyphosis or abnormal curvature of the spine. Other advantages are decrease blood loss during operation, decreased post operative pain, decreased infection rate, and decreased complications due to CSF leak. Minimally invasive spine procedures are typically performed through the tubes that dilate through the muscles while using the radiography to locate anatomical structures.  Microdiskectomy procedures use a very small incision and an advanced operating microscope to treat spinal disease.

The low back region of the spinal column is called the lumbar spine. Protected within the bones of the lumbar spine are the spinal cord, nerves, and blood vessels. The five lumbar bones are called vertebrae and are numbered L1 to L5. Each bone is separated and cushioned by shock-absorbing discs.  Each disc contains a fibrous outer layer called the annulus that surrounds a gel-filled inner layer called the nucleus. The vertebrae are held in place by muscles and ligaments that provide support and enable movement of your body. The spinal nerves exit from the spinal column through holes called foraminae on both sides of the vertebra. The lumbar spine supports the weight of your body and can be a prime location for injury and pain.
