Spine Surgery Houston

Spine Surgery Houston

Spine Surgery Houston by Ajay K. Bindal, MD

Microdiskectomy, and MIS procedures are used spinal decompression for stenosis and diskectomy and more recently for spinal fusions as well. More complicated cases can even be used to treat scoliosis. The principles behind Minimally Invasive Surgery are to prevent muscle disruption and preserve stability of the spine. MIS helps preserve the posterior tension band of the spine that may be needed to prevent kyphosis or abnormal curvature of the spine. Other advantages are decrease blood loss during operation, decreased post operative pain, decreased infection rate, and decreased complications due to CSF leak. Minimally invasive spine procedures are typically performed through the tubes that dilate through the muscles while using the radiography to locate anatomical structures.  Microdiskectomy procedures use a very small incision and an advanced operating microscope to treat spinal disease.
